We interrupt our no-lj-during-the-day rule to post two very different yet important things:
1) The fantastic Fran Varian (on hipmama.com): The Tragedy of Abortion Rhetoric (I won't quote from it because I started to copy and paste, and then I kept on copying and copying, because the whole thing is quotable, so just go read it already.)
2) David Sedaris on undecided voters:
"To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”
To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked." |

San Francisco is hosting two medical conferences about Lyme Disease this weekend.
Many of you have seen this on huskypapi's lj, but for those who haven't, please consider donating any amount to my lovely and beloved friend Fran's health fund.
"Recently diagnosed with late stage Lyme disease, Fran is literally battling for her life after 14 years of mis-diagnosis allowing this disease to destroy her system. Treatment is expensive and we are all working together to help her raise money so she can fight this disease."
We had a kick-ass benefit a few weeks ago, and funds have been coming in little trickles from friends all over the country, but Fran still needs at least a couple thousand dollars to be able to receive the treatment she needs. Please consider giving a couple dollars, or five, or ten.

Cauliflower and hazelnut soup with turmeric and curry: oh yeah. But next time, less stock. It got a bit thin, because the recipe is from some chef's blog, and it called for "enough good stock to cover by 5 cm." But you know, cauliflower and onion float, and of course who knows what size pot she was using. Either way, amazing flavor. If anyone wants the recipe, let me know and I'll post it. Super easy.
Dungeness crab with lots of melted butter. If ever you want a meal that goes on forever, this is it: a crab each, omgsogood. This was basically my xmas present.
Arugula salad with roasted beets, oranges, and walnuts. Viniagrette with walnut oil and a tiny bit of shallot.
mmm. |

The Ten Commandments for Gilbert and George.
Thou shalt fight conformism.
Thou shalt be the messenger of freedoms.
Thou shalt make use of sex.
Thou shalt reinvent life.
Thou shalt grab the soul.
Thou shalt give thy love.
Thou shalt create artificial art.
Thou shalt have sense of purpose.
Thou shalt not know exactly what thou doest, but thou shalt do it.
Thou shalt give something back. |

"Throughout my life somebody has always tried to set the boundaries of who and what I will be allowed to be...what is common to these boundary lines is that their most destructive power lies in what I can be persuaded to do to myself--the walls of fear, shame, and guilt I can be encouraged to build in my own mind. I have learned through great sorrow that all systems of oppression feed on public silence and private terrorization." --"Killing Rage," by bell hooks |

| let's eat books!* |
[Nov. 22nd, 2005|10:23 am] |
Lately I've been reading again, more than I have for a while, and I feel suddenly more like myself than I have in eons. The tv cure** took longer than I could ever have predicted.
anarqueso asked for book recommendations, and I got all excited about it. Here's the list I gave her, plus a few more.
Can you give me some book recommendations, too, pretty-please-cherry-on-top? One or two or ten, however much time you've got. I'm getting plenty from anarqueso's post, but I'd love some from you, my people.
I'm also really curious about whether anyone else has read any Peter Carey, and if not, then why the hell not?
The Master and Margarita, Mikhail Bulgakov Oscar and Lucinda, Peter Carey (forgive the movie tie-in link, it was the only one with reviews and shit) (See also by P. Carey- anything he's written, I think. Especially The Unusual Life of Tristan Smith, Bliss (also a good movie, make sure to get the right one, I think '91), and The True History of the Kelly Gang. There are a lot of his novels that I haven't read yet- exciting!) Ada (Actually called Ada, or Ardor: A Family Chronicle), V. Nabokov Motherless Brooklyn, Jonathan Lethem (also by Lethem: Gun, with Occasional Music) The Satanic Verses, Salman Rushdie Was, Geoff Ryman (technically not one of my top favorites, but a good book that just popped into my head) Nights at the Circus, Angela Carter (check out her short stories (some of which I like more than others), and also her non-fiction. I haven't read many of her novels (though I've been meaning to forever, because she's completely brilliant). Sula, Tony Morrison (and pretty much anything else by Morrison, except I haven't read the last one or two) The Bone People, Keri Hulme
*I love this print by Andrice Arp. **My last relationship was shitty; we had a big tv in a small apartment and I watched It while my partner played computer games. For two years. Now that I haven't watched any for a couple years, I think my attention span is finally getting back to where it was when I didn't own one of the damn things.
oh yeah, and I'm sorry about the Schmamazon links. I'd use Powell's but their reviews are not as robust. |

I strongly urge everyone in the universe (yes, that means you) to go see this movie at the Castro between now and next Thursday. I got to see it in Berlin last year (the original title is "Gegen die Wand" which literally means "Against the Wall," though the ami translation is "Head-On") and it's amazing, amazing, dark, beautiful, fucked up, and amazing.

oh lord- listening to a random Czech internet radio station with my (stupid) Windows Media Player at work: http://live.atlas.cz/cro3.asp there's a very sweet Czech big-band-sounding jazz song playing right now- sounds like it's from the 30s. I love this stuff. how to find it on cd? |
